    In the 1960's a neighbor had an idea to for extra income for her and my mom, by her drumming up business and my mom hemming pants and doing alterations. My mom already had her hands full as a homemaker, wife, mother and daughter. Also sewed her clothes and for 3 daughters. That was the era where 99% of dinners were made from scratch and no dishwasher. It wasn't doable. I remember her comment, "I would rather sew from scratch than do alterations". For a coworker, I recently hemmed two pairs of cotton work/uniform type trousers, and replaced a button and a closure on one. He gave me $50 for quick turnaround and not having to take them to the cleaners. All he wanted was a half inch turned up twice and stitched--easy. Wow. Then he brought me 2 pairs of dress slacks to remove the cuff and hem. I did one pair and returned the 2nd. It took 4 hours (I don't know why) in addition to many UA-cam videos. I zigzagged the edge, turned it under about half an inch and hand sewed a blind hem stitch. The zigzag wasn't flat and felt bulky. Because when you turn up, the hem is smaller than the leg, sovthat wasn't perfect either. He said , "so what!". I am sure they were fine for his imminent need. But I told him if I cannot do something, I am returning it or it will never get done.

    Amazing! GREAT instructions, very clear and straightforward - there are other sleeve shortening videos but I haven’t found one that shows how to remove the placket. I need to shorten sleeves often and the cost has been prohibitive forcing me to find out how to do it myself! You have given me the confidence to actually try it myself! Thank you!

    I liked the way you explained. I'm a amateur in sewing, just do mendings, but I needed to fix a top of an uniform (a scrub) that was big for me in the shoulders. I enjoy your explanations and the comparisons that you made. Thank you very much, I live in Aruba and is the first time I see one of your videos, but like it. Now I will do my scrub and cross my fingers that I do a good job. Thank you, Joan

    I wonder if you might have any advice about a straight hem casual dress shirt. I followed these instructions which worked well except where your tabs were my shirt has side slit vents. I opened the seam slit up higher to accommodate the shortening but above the slit the shirt had very rough hems unfinished edges.

    Great video dealing with shoulders which I always have problem with as drop shoulders don’t look good on me. What I got from your video is check bust and hip measurements first then alter sleeve using paper method. At 22:26 you took a strand of your wax thread to tack the waistband down. Why do you need wax thread for this step? Where do you get it? Thanks for the video.

    • @AngelaWoolsey
      @AngelaWoolsey Місяць тому

      I use wax thread on all of my hand sewing projects if I have the color that matches the garment. Waxing the thread, makes the thread, stronger, helps it to glide through the fabric, easier, and helps prevent the thread from getting knotted up. Click below for the link to the waxed thread amzn.to/4apdZqw

    • @AngelaWoolsey
      @AngelaWoolsey 2 місяці тому

      I don't remember what size these were. The elastic was the exact measurement of the legs and waist of the underwear. I didn't cut the elastic smaller and then stretch it. As far as the elastic goes, it was either given to me or I bought it at the garment district in Los Angeles Here is a link. I don't know the name of it, but I found this. It is the only listing I saw. amzn.to/3UHQS5B

    What happened to the part where you actually cut the seam???? you went straight to sewing

    • @AngelaWoolsey

      Because there’s no cutting in this alteration. I leave the original seam in to keep everything from shifting. After I sew the new seam, I’ll remove the original and press the sew seam open.

    Wow I discovered this video in a search for info on the curved embroidery scissors people use to cut close to stitching, and wondered about the duckbill kind. You showed how they work, but along the way I saw also how to do a rolled hem on denim, which I thought was not possible except for very lightweight denim. Thank you for such a clear explanation. You mentioned having lots of tools for cutting. How do you sharpen things like the duckbill or curved embroidery scissors? I’m guessing you do sharpen your tools occasionally 🤓 I hope your channel grows.

    Hi did you make the kilts? Because I want to make my self one and I know for a women it is different from men’s because of the waist is narrow and the hips…. Men’s structure is straight. Sorry I’m French having difficulty to explain But you get the picture.. thanks

    • @AngelaWoolsey
      @AngelaWoolsey 2 місяці тому

      No, I’m having trouble getting started because math is not my strong suit and my son-in-law, who I’m making this for, lives on the opposite coast, so I won’t be able to do fittings. Men’s kilts aren’t straight either. They flare by fractions of an inch. I was reading through the book again today, so hopefully it will soon start to make more sense, then I can get started .
